I went to Lagrants Honey Bees Beekeeping Supplies in Ware, MA today! We had gotten our wooden boxes and frames for the Hive from John, the Carpenter, but I needed to pick up all the tools in preparation for our bees arrival!
We went through the list of what we needed and then saw if there was anything we owned that could replace it. For instance, we could use a crowbar for a hive tool, we own leather work gloves, we can make a gate for the entrance of the hive in the fall to keep mice out, we could use a VERY SOFT bristle paint brush for a bee brush.
When I arrived at Lagrants, I met Bernadette. Bernadette Lagrant was absolutely THE most charming woman. She was such a sweetheart and shared her stories of beekeeping with her husband Frank, their son, and now their grandchildren!
The essentials to be buy were a smoker,
Then we had to check out the tools, especially the smoker to see if we could get it to work when the bees arrived.
Success!
